Our class began the year by reading the book Flat Stanley, an adventure about a boy who was flattened by his bulletin board as he slept. He then went on to many adventures made possible by his new flat status. His parents even mailed him to a friend for a vacation.

Each student in our room got into the Flat Stanley project by creating their own Flat Stanley. They wrote a letter to a friend or relative with a request that the recipient of Flat Stanley take him along to work or a special place in their area, photograph him, and write about what he got to do in their area. Then we’ve asked that they send him on to someone else. Our Flat Stanley packets have been mailed out with the request to have him finish his adventures and return to our classroom by the beginning of May.

Flat Stanley’s original destinations are Nicollet, New Ulm, and Hugo, Minnesota (two of our classmates have relatives who live in Hugo!) Colorado, Texas, and Taiwan. Flat Stanley hosts can respond by emailing our class or sending a post card; or we’ll just await his final arrival.

Students in our classroom are well into the Scholastic Classrooms Care program for this year. This year’s program requires that each student read 10 books by mid-December. We have some avid readers who have already accomplished this goal, and are continuing to read more. The class is committed to filling the reading chart if possible, even though only ten books each are required. Each person can contribute according to their own ability, and together we can help others. The Classrooms Care program is committed to donating $1 million in books to needy schools, based on the participation of students like ours.

Welcome from Mrs. Barb Polzin to 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade!

I am looking forward to a great year under the theme God’s Time is the Right Time. As a community of learners, affectionately known as The Reading Dragons, we plan to enjoy a lot of exciting learning. We’re especially anticipating many opportunities to read and enjoy great stories, starting with our focus on the New Testament stories from God’s Word.

Things that will not change in this new school year will be the working together to learn all that we can. Under God’s grace, we’ll work to put our best effort into using the gifts and abilities with which we have been blessed by God. Together we will make our classroom a great place to be.

Humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 1 Peter 5:6

Welcome to Trinity!

I am Mrs. Joyce Lendt, the 1st and 2nd grade teacher at Trinity. It is a privilege being a part of the mission we have in providing a high quality Christian education for all the children at Trinity Lutheran School. Once again, our year begins with anticipation of encouraging and teaching the children to think and learn above and beyond where each has been before. Each child has been given different skills and talents, and yet each child has the common goal to use those God-given talents to the best of his/her ability. Our motivation to do our best is the love God has for us. You will see the love of God as it permeates all around as the children are taught and cared for. What an awesome privilege! It truly is a joy to teach and to learn!

Our school theme this year is “God’s Time is the Right Time”. It will be a great year!

In Christ’s service,

It’s true that some children, with parental guidance, are able to read and write at a very early age. But this doesn’t mean they are able to make proper evaluation of the things they do, because what they do, many times is just a conditioned response.

Only when a child has developed the capacity to think, to direct his/her natural curiosity to find answers to meaningful questions, has true learning for that child been accomplished.

Instead of being directed in all their activities, children learn a great deal as they play. They search for answers to their own questions and they find answers in their own make-believe games. Children come to a deeper understanding of themselves by pretending to be doctors, storekeepers and truck drivers.

When a child shares or takes turns with others, recognizes another’s frustrations, acts out her own anxieties and conflicts—-all in a world of make-believe—he/she is doing the plain, hard work of growing up through the natural process of childhood.

When we rush children into clever performance of skills, when we organize their daily lives to that there is not a moment for inner contemplation, we decrease the possibilities for genuine thoughT and individual growth.

Let’s let children be children for the few short years of childhood. Let’s let them accumulate precious memories that will serve them well in adult life. Most of us have happy recollections of our childhood days. When life hurts, when the way grows weary, or saddened by losses we so many times find solace in remembering something out of our yesterdays.

The truth of this is demonstrated by the hold that songs and poems we learned as children have upon us. These songs and poems appeal to us because their major note touches one of the deeper and elemental things in human nature: CHILDHOOD
