Band Policy

Belonging to band includes the responsibility of attending every performance. We need every instrument to achieve the balance of sound we are used to hearing at practice. Each person in a band is vitally important and not easily replaced on short notice.

In view of this, the Board of Education has instated the following policy: ATTENDANCE AT ALL PERFORMANCES IS MANDATORY. (The performance in the Friendship Days’ Parade is included as a scheduled performance.) If your child is unable to attend a performance because of scheduling conflicts involving your family, a written excuse is required in advance of the performance, preferably at least one week prior to the performance date. In case of illness or an emergency, a phone call to the director is expected. If you cannot call, please send a written excuse by the next rehearsal date.

INSTRUMENT RENTAL

All instrument rental contracts are the responsibility of the parents. The band director shall attempt to work with a capable music supply store to secure adequate rental arrangements for our parents.

.:LESSONS:.

ALL BAND STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE LESSONS.

This policy has been instated because the student and the band program suffer without instruction. There isn’t time to provide such instruction adequately in our rehearsal schedule. There is always more to learn on an instrument.

Students are expected to practice 20 minutes per day 5 times per week. Students will keep a log of their practice time. Parents are asked to sign their child’s practice schedule each week before their child’s next lesson. Filling out a practice log is designed to encourage students to fulfill their practice obligation, and to help parents keep in touch with their child’s efforts. The practice log makes up 1/3 of the band grade.

The choice of instructor is up to you. You may take lessons through TLS or elsewhere. The band director will arrange for a well-qualified instructor to give lessons during the school day at Trinity.

A schedule will be given to each band student so that he is aware of his lesson time. Students are responsible for any and all missed classes while at their lesson. Band rehearsals will be held twice per week. Rehearsals will begin the first week of school and lessons will begin in the second week. (Beginning band students will start attending band rehearsals when they reach the point in their lesson books which shows them to be ready to join the larger group.)

.:REPORTS:.

Progress reports will be sent quarterly. Reports from the individual instructors will be sent home with the student’s report card.

.:FEES:.

The lesson fee may change from year to year. Please pay for lessons at the first lesson of the month for the whole month. Make checks payable to the lesson instructor. Unless a child is sick or the instructor cannot come, there will be a charge for all scheduled lessons. Forgetting one’s instrument or failing to go to the lesson will not result in a refund.

There is no additional band fee. The activity fee covers band expenses.

Students who play a school owned instrument pay a yearly rental fee.

.:UNIFORMS:.

Students wear a band t-shirt for concert, festival and parade performances. The t-shirt is handed out shortly before the event. It should be worn tucked in. When finished with the performance the t-shirt should be returned on that day, inside-out and unwashed. The remainder of the uniform would be dark blue or black slacks or jeans in good condition (not frayed and no holes).

For the parade, the uniform includes the band T-shirt, royal blue or blue jean shorts, white socks and tennis shoes.

.:CARE OF MUSIC:.

Band music is costly, but it should be a one-time purchase for each piece if we treat that music properly. Music should be kept within folders. Do not wrap it around your horn inside your case. You may mark performance notes on your music in pencil, but please no ink. Penciled marks do not have to be removed before handing in.

In the past we have had problems with lost music or music not being turned in. Since each part costs $1.50 or more to replace, paying for this unreturned music will become the responsibility of the person to whom that music was assigned. Charges are also made for damaged music.
